My Story

U D I

THE JOURNEY TO  JUNGLE FRIENDS

Udi’s story is one of resilience and transformation, beginning in the heart of New York City. Purchased by someone who didn’t understand the immense care and responsibility a baby monkey requires, Udi was treated as more of a burden than a beloved companion. Eventually abandoned in a cold, desolate basement, he was left to fend for himself, with no food or care—an early chapter filled with neglect and loneliness.

His fortunes changed when two empathetic young women discovered him. Though they lacked experience in raising a monkey, their hearts were in the right place. They took him in and did their best, offering him shelter in their small New York apartments. But despite their efforts, Udi's nutritional and environmental needs went unmet, and after a year, his health began to decline. The lack of sunlight and proper diet led him to develop metabolic bone disease. Udi struggled to walk, resorting to scooting along the floor—a heartbreaking sign of his deteriorating condition.

Determined to give him the help he desperately needed, the women began researching sanctuaries across the country, tirelessly seeking the best possible place for Udi’s recovery. After an exhaustive search, they discovered Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary, which offered the expert care and nurturing environment they knew he needed.

At just 14 months old, Udi arrived at Jungle Friends, weak and unable to stand. Weighing only 4 pounds, with bowed legs, stiff joints, malformed wrists, and an overbite, he was a shadow of the playful monkey he would soon become. But his journey toward healing had finally begun.

Today, Udi has made a full recovery, blossoming into a big, strong, and charismatic monkey who is beloved by all. In his sprawling "Thunder Dome" habitat, Udi shows off his strength and agility, swinging, leaping, and flying through the air like a seasoned acrobat. Ever the charmer, Udi loves to socialize with anyone who passes by, often pulling playful pranks on visitors with a mischievous glint in his eye. His outgoing personality and athletic stunts have made him the center of attention at the sanctuary.

Udi's spirit doppelgänger is George Clooney. Both are known for their good looks, charm, and playful sense of humor. They share a knack for pulling off lighthearted pranks, making them even more endearing to those around them.

Don’t let this stoic photo fool you—Udi is anything but serious. Behind that calm exterior lies a silly, sweet prankster always on the lookout for his next bit of fun.

Whether he’s charming visitors or swinging through his "Thunder Dome" with the grace of an acrobat, Udi is constantly ready to steal anything he can get his hands—or tail—on.

And when he’s not busy playing tricks, Udi is turning on the charm, flirting with his favorite monkey companion or sweet-talking the caregivers who can’t resist his playful personality.

What’s Udi’s go-to snack?

You guessed it—bananas! 🍌 He’s a total fan.

Life hack, monkey-style: Spider monkeys open their bananas from the bottom, proving there’s always more than one way to peel a banana.

He may be big and handsome, but Udi’s still got one weakness—he’s still bananas for bananas!

In addition to being handsome, charming, and funny, Udi is also incredibly smart. He was one of the first to figure out how to use the new hydration station!

Here’s Udi in one of his pensive moments, deep in thought—probably contemplating his next prank or banana snack!
