Gentle & Devoted Mama
Monkers was only four years old when she was rescued from a bankrupt Roadside Zoo. She was accompanied by her younger sister, Zumie, whom Monkers helped raise after another monkey in their group of 25 capuchins injured Zumie, a nursing mother monkey, and a baby.
The monkeys were anesthetized for transport, and upon arrival at the sanctuary, the nursing mother woke and rejected her baby during the long drive from Texas to Florida. After watching the documentary "Wild Animal Repo," we now understand that it’s likely the mother and son were separated during the capture, and the baby was mistakenly placed in a kennel with the wrong female, who was not his mother.
The infant, only a few months old, was in critical condition at the end of the thousand-mile journey to Jungle Friends. Sanctuary staff immediately stepped in to bottle-feed and provide the necessary care. To our delight, Monkers emerged as a nurturing figure for the baby, whom we named Mochi.
Monkers lovingly took on the role of Mochi's foster mom, carrying him on her back until he grew nearly as big as she was. She spent her days grooming and playing with him, nurturing him as if he were her own. Witnessing the heartwarming bond between these two young monkeys filled our hearts with joy.
Monkers, the ever-dedicated surrogate mama of Jungle Friends, has lovingly taken on several infants in need of care over the years, providing a nurturing and safe home for each one. Her latest baby, Baby Charlie, arrived in her care when he was just a little one, and under her gentle guidance, he’s blossomed into the thriving five-year-old capuchin he is today. Watching Charlie’s transformation has been an incredibly rewarding experience, as he’s grown stronger and more confident, his personality shining through with each day.
Now, Charlie shares his life with his new roommate and companion, Bonnie, and the two have formed a beautiful and inseparable bond. Together, they navigate the world side by side, learning and growing in each other’s company. Bonnie, once a newcomer, is now an integral part of the family, and it’s heartwarming to see how the bond between all the monkeys has flourished.
Monkers, along with Zumie, is still right next door, offering their steady presence, love, and wise guidance. Their support continues to provide the foundation for the monkeys’ growth, and it’s clear that their nurturing care has helped shape not only Charlie but many others who have been lucky enough to call them family.
With the heart and dedication that defines them, Monkers and Zumie are ready to open their hearts once again to another baby in need. Their love and care know no bounds, and it’s beautiful to witness how their journey continues—offering warmth, love, and support to every new life they welcome.
Angelina Jolie is Monkers' spirit doppelganger because both exhibit an extraordinary nurturing instinct and commitment to care. Just as Jolie has adopted and lovingly raised children from diverse backgrounds, Monkers took on the role of foster mom to other species, providing unwavering love and support. Their shared resilience and dedication to nurturing others make them kindred spirits.
